Hut

The Britannia Hut had become one of the most frequented in Switzerland, the number of overnights having stabilised since 1980 at about 8’500 a year.

The new interior consisted of a grond floor with spacious entrance hall, a winter room, a drying room, and inside toilets. On the first floor were three large dining-rooms and a kitchen. Upstairs were comfortable dormitories sleeping 134 in rooms of 6 -11 beds on the second floor and 12 – 18 beds on the third, each bed with an individual duvet.

History

1912
The new hut proved instantly popular as many as 1’042 over-nights in 1913, the first complete year it was open. Despite a noticeable decline of activity in the Alps during World War 1, more than 6’500 stayed there between 1912 and 1922.

1928 – 1929
The increased number of beds in 1922 quickly proved inadequate, so the Geneva Section planned to extend the building to provide 84 beds. The hut was also bitterly cold in winter, so to address these problems the intention was to build a stone extension to the west and to face the original wooden structure  with stone, at an estimated cost of 35’000 francs.

1951 – 1952
Once the war was over the Geneva Section planned to renovate the hut yet again. It was cramped and uncomfortable, the dining-room was too small; and the roof leaked.

1996 – 1997
The first plan for the renovation was to raise the hut, but this was refused by the Department of Works of the Valais on the grounds that this would change its original appearance too drastically. A second plan was adopted, to build an extension attached to the main building in order to provide the same space. Work began at the end of May 1996, a sign of the times being that all materials were flown in by helicopter.

Tours

Haute-Route
The Haute Route is the name given to a route undertaken on food or by ski touring between Saas-Fee in Switzerland and Chamonix in France. First charted as a summer mountaineering route by members of the English Alpine Club in the mid 19th century, the route takes around 12+ days walking or 7+ days skiing for the 180 km from the Britannia hut home of fourteen 4000 meter summits.

Strahlhorn 4190 m
As a starting point for the Strahlhorn 4190m is the Britannia hut 3030m well located. From Saas-Fee in the Swiss canton Valais, one get into the Britannia hut. A cablecar facilitates the ascent to the hut. Fazit: The Strahlhorn is a perfect “ski-mountain”, very well as ski tour feasible. In summer it is a long walk over a flat glacier terrain and not a lot of crevasses.

Fluchthorn 3795m
Very nice summit, perfect for acclimatisation and an incredible descent to Saas-Almagell. ( 3h 30″ )

Rimpfischhorn 4198 m
The Rimpfischorn is a mountain in the Pennine Alps of Switzerland. The Rimpfischorn is located of the mountain chain that links the Monte Rosa with the Mischabel peaks. It is a popular mountain, since it can be climbed from mountaineer Mecca Saas-Fee. The view from this mountain is extraordinary.  Walking time 6 1/2 h.

Alphubel 4206 m
The Allalin and Alphubel are two of the high peaks on the crest between Zermatt and Saas-Fee. There are a combination to start from the Britannia hut and climb the Allalinhorn via the Hohlaubgrad. The technical difficulties on this combination are some moderatlely steep snow/ice slope near the summit of the Alphubel and some stiff 4th class rock climbing on the Feechopf, but these sections are limited in length. This is a long day at high altitude and good fitness is a must. Walking time 7-8 h.

Allainhorn 4027 m (The Summerhit!)
The Allalinhorn over the Hohlaubgrad is one of the most beautiful ridge tours with short climbing. Walking time 3, 1/2h
